Dialogue for Development Distinguished Lecture 2026
PIOJ Returns with Dialogue for Development Lecture, February 26
The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) will host the return of its Dialogue for Development Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, February 26, beginning at 10:00 a.m., under the theme “Harnessing the Shift: Reimagining a Sustainable Future.” The lecture will focus on potential development actions to address Jamaica’s current demographic trends, which are marked by stagnant population growth and an ageing population.
The featured lecturer will be Dr Jose Miguel Guzman, an internationally recognized specialist in population dynamics, poverty and climate change adaptation, ageing, and sexual and reproductive health. It is anticipated that Dr Guzman will explore policy suggestions related to skills for the labour market and economic resilience to climate change. The public is invited to follow the lecture live via the PIOJ YouTube channel, with coverage also provided by the Jamaica Observer. An RJR Hotline outside broadcast will accompany the event, featuring interviews with PIOJ technical specialists in areas that are related to population dynamics.
In keeping with the theme of the lecture, the PIOJ will open its roving exhibition. The exhibition will be staged in the Corporate Area and at selected development-focused events. Dr Wayne Henry, Director General of the PIOJ, noted: “The PIOJ through initiatives such as this lecture is committed to propose policies that strengthen economic resilience, foster inclusive growth, and ensure that demographic realities are addressed in ways that secure opportunities for all Jamaicans.”
The Dialogue for Development Lecture closely follows the recently held 10th edition of the Best Practice Symposium for Social and Community Development, which emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for returning and incoming citizens, and residents of Jamaica to participate in national development.
